WATCH: Certain types of E-Bikes to be allowed on Colorado Springs trails COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – After more than a year of discussion, Colorado Springs city officials decided certain types of electronic bikes will be allowed on all trails in the city.

The discussion was centered around whether to allow e-bikes on all city trails, as they are allowed on county ones and urban trails. The discussion included a survey sent to residents, of whom, 58% said they were in favor of them.

“This is an opportunity to bring ourselves up to industry standard,” said Mayor Yemi Mobolade, who explained that most counties and cities in Colorado Springs allow some types of e-bikes on trails.

This ordinance allows tier one pedal assist e-bikes on trails. These bikes require the user to pedal, only providing an assist to the user. The bikes don’t go faster than 20 miles per hour. Any e-bike that can move forward without the user pedaling will still not be allowed.

The ordinance passed with a vote of 5-3. Councilmember Nancy Henjum said she was on the fence about whether to pass it, ultimately voting in favor because of the above distinction.

“The reality is we have to move forward as a city,” she said. “E-bikes are here, they’re not going anywhere, and so we need the ability to be able to manage them.”
