(KOMO) TOPICS: Seattle Protected bike lane Waterfront Pioneer Square Belltown Waterfront Park Community Cyclists SEATTLE — Seattle celebrated the opening of a new 1.2-mile protected bike lane along the city’s waterfront Saturday morning.

The City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront, Civic Projects, and Sound Transit, along with Deputy Mayor Jessyn Farrell, Cascade Bicycle Club, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, and community members, marked the occasion.

The city says the new two-way bike path provides a crucial link for cyclists between Pioneer Square and Belltown, connecting to the existing Portside trail to the south and eventually to the Elliott Bay trail, Myrtle Edwards Park, and Centennial Park to the north.

"The 1.2-mile-long bike path delivers the City’s overall vision for a greener, more connected cityscape," officials said in a press release.

The Waterfront Park Promenade features mixed-use intersections and local access driveways where pedestrians and vehicles cross the new bike lanes. Clear markings, signs, and signals are in place to alert travelers to the need to look out for others and follow applicable laws.
