"I think we need to invest in quality of life in this community," Board Chairman Daniel Quipp said at the Oct. 1 board meeting, where the project was discussed. "This is a major investment in quality of life for decades to come."

Quipp suggested the entire community, not just Representative Town Meeting (RTM), participate in a bond vote later this fiscal year. Residents "will vote according to their vision and quality of life but their pocketbook as well," he said.

Carol Lolatte, director of the Department of Recreation and Parks, said the pool was built in 1957 and renovated in the late 1980s. Several repairs have been made over the last few years.

"We’re at the point where the Band-Aid just doesn’t stick anymore," Lolatte said. "The pool has lived its life cycle."

About 850,000 gallons of water was lost over the course of the summer. Lolatte called the number "pretty significant."
