As we enjoy the beauty of our community, it’s essential to remember the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety. The Batavia Police Department is committed to promoting a safe and responsible environment for all road users. In this effort, we’d like to remind everyone of the crucial role we play in preventing accidents and ensuring a safe commute.

Proper Use of Crosswalks

As pedestrians, it’s vital to follow the rules of the road and use crosswalks correctly:

Always use designated crosswalks, and look left, right, and left again before crossing. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the crosswalk. Follow pedestrian signals and obey traffic laws. Be visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially at night.

Drivers, remember:

Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks (NYS VTL § 1151). Be prepared to stop for pedestrians, especially in areas with high foot traffic. Reduce speed and be cautious in areas with pedestrian activity. Bicycle Safety and Lane Etiquette As cyclists, it’s crucial to follow traffic laws and ride safely:Ride in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic laws (NYS VTL § 1231). Use designated bicycle lanes, and ride in a predictable manner. Wear a properly fitted helmet, and ensure your bike is in good working condition. Be visible by using lights and reflectors, especially at night.Motorists, remember:Yield to bicyclists and provide a safe passing distance (NYS VTL § 1122-a). Be cautious when turning or merging and anticipate bicyclists’ movements. Reduce speed and be patient in areas with high bicycle traffic. […]
