Youths on the ‘Cycling for Human Rights’ campaign started the ride from Angkor Wat to Phnom Penh yesterday. Some 30 youths have taken to the road on their bicycles from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh in a “Cycling for Human Rights” campaign. The ride which started from Angkor Wat yesterday morning will end in Phnom Penh’s Freedom Park on December 10, the International Human Rights Day.
The campaign is aimed at urging the government to strengthen human rights and allow for more freedom of expression to protect and uphold human rights.
It is jointly organised by the Cambodian Youth Network (CYN), Cambodian Centre for Human Rights, Equitable Organisation Cambodia and the Association of Independent Democrats of the Informal Economy.
Heng Kimhong, head of the Research and Advocacy Programme of the Cambodian Youth Network, said the Cycling for Human Rights has two events.
“The main event is the ride involving 30 youths from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh.
“The other is on December 10 when 60 youths in Phnom Penh will ride from National Road 6 to gather in Freedom Park and meet up with the 30 cyclists from Siem Reap.
“We will commemorate International Human Rights Day at the gathering.“At this forum, we will urge the government to provide full space for local communities and Cambodians to exercise their rights to freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly, the right to assemble, professional rights, participation in the protection of the environment, and resources nature,” he said.Heng said the meeting will also seek to encourage young people […]
