HYDERABAD: Hundreds of cyclists pedalled their way across the streets of Hyderabad on Sunday morning.
From Uppal to Gachibowli and TSPA junction to Suchitra, a total of around 350 cyclists participated in the ‘Hyderabad Cycling Revolution’ event covering the length and breadth of the city. The event was conducted as part of creating awareness on cyclists’ safety and to let people know that they too share city roads.
Eventually, the cyclists coming from both the routes met at Khairatabad and cycled to Charminar which was their destination. The event was an initiative by Santhana Selvan , who holds the title of ‘Bicycle Mayor of Hyderabad’. Speaking to the media, Selvan said that the event was dedicated to fellow cyclist Nithin Agarwal who died after a drunk driver rammed him on December 30, 2021. “We want Nithin to be the last victim.
Drunk driving is still a bailable offence. The law should be made stricter so as to avoid such terrible accidents,” Nithin said. Several cyclists from different walks of life responded to Selvan’s call to rally on the streets. “The initiative has been successful. We believe that we transmitted a message for the entire city to see the importance for cycling and their safety,” Rama Krishna, a private doctor said.
Ravi Sambari of Relief Riders Hyderabad, who coordinated the event, noted that it was good to see a massive response for the event.
