Mountain biking in 1986. It seems pretty clear at this point that mountain biking (though it might upset road bikers) is not a passing fad. But in 1986, it wasn’t all that clear. Mountain biking had been around for a decent bit at that point. Marin County, California saw some of the first American mountain bikers in the late 1960s, and Crested Butte’s mountain biking history really got going in the 1970s. Plus, the Specialized Stumpjumper, one of the first fat-tire bikes widely available for under $1,000 , was released in 1982. But in 1986, for cities like Toronto, the sport was still fairly new.
This clip from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation discusses whether or not mountain biking was there to stay. While bikers in Colorado and California were using mountain bikes for mountains, these Toronto bikers were using them to off-road in the city, and some people questioned their longevity.
“ When you can buy mountain bikes at Canadian Tire for $99.95 instead of $700 at a specialty bike shop it’ll be interesting to see if the upscale market segment that has to be different or that has to have its pasta homemade, whether that particular group will continue to stay there or whether they’ll go on and find another specialized leisure commodity. “ VIDEO: Classic Snowboard vs Skier Rivalry Resurrected Categories:
