Man on bike talking to woman The University of Montana has been honored with a gold-level Bicycle Friendly University distinction by the premier grassroots bicycle advocacy organization, League of American Bicyclists. This distinction is in recognition of the institution’s achievements in promoting and enabling safe, accessible bicycling on campus.

The last time the University of Montana was awarded a Bicycle Friendly University distinction was 2013. Since then, the Associated Students of the University of Montana (ASUM) Bike Program has expanded its mechanic crew, service offerings, and overall engagement within the campus community.

“It is central to ASUM Transportation mission to promote and provide sustainable and accessible transportation options to the campus community, and this designation aligns with that mission,” said ASUM Transportation Director Vickie Rectenwald. “We look forward to the continuous growth and betterment of the program in the future.”

The University of Montana encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as self-service bike tune-up stations, access to student bike mechanics, bike accessories and equipment at-cost, registration opportunities, and more.

"When universities make biking easier, safer, and more accessible, they’re not just helping students get from point A to point B—they’re leading the charge in creating a more sustainable future," said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. "By prioritizing better biking, Bicycle Friendly Universities like the University of Montana are empowering students and staff to make choices that benefit their health, their environment, and their communities."
