Ever think of doing RAGBRAI on a BMX bike backwards?
Not “backwards” as in Davenport to Sioux City, in the opposite direction of the 30,000 or so other brave RAGBRAI riders who make their way across the whole of Iowa every year.
“Backwards” as in facing the back of your bike. “Backwards” as in who needs a Garmin Varia (though seriously, we should all be using some kind of rear-facing radar)?“Backwards” as in what better way to get to know the person drafting your wheel then riding face-to-face with them?
Well, if you’ve ever thought of that (and let’s face it, you haven’t), Alaskan biker Will Walker beat you to the punch, as he just finished this year’s iteration of RAGBRAI on his BMX bike… backwards.
10 years ago, Walker was hanging out with his buddies, sitting on his bike’s handlebars. Then and there, he decided riding his bike forward wasn’t quite doing it for him anymore, flipped the script on the entire history of bike riding, and started riding butt first. Will Walker In a video segment produced by an Alaskan CBS television affiliate , Walker explained that he likes riding backwards because of the more upright position it puts him in.
