The final Grand Tour of the year has brought lots of talking points to professional cycling and we are here to cover all of them. This week on the GCN Racing Show , Joe Timms delved into those and more as the cycling season enters its twilight.
First up was, of course, the Vuelta a España, where controversy has been the name of the game thus far. Considering the Vuelta’s now infamous team time trial, Joe delved into the performance of dsm-firmenich , the team crash from Jayco AlUla, the trouble at Ineos Grenadiers and the different solutions to the problem.
But that was not all from the Vuelta with stage 2 also offering challenges to the peloton and the race organisers with more rain storms disrupting the second day around Barcelona. Nevertheless, the racing still generated some storylines as Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny) took an emotional win after the death of the team’s devo rider Tijl De Decker last week.
Racing, however, was not restricted to Spain as the Renewi Tour returned to the Benelux region after a one-year hiatus. The race was won by Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) which was his third overall victory at the stage race. In Germany, Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step) was the youngest rider in 76 years to win the Deutschland Tour. On the women’s side, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) returned to winning ways in one of her last WorldTour stage races with her victory in the Tour of Scandinavia last week .
