December 01, (THEWILL) – At the 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State, the host, Team Delta, won its first gold medal in the 12km mixed relay race, defeating athletes from three other states, Oyo, Plateau, and Lagos.

Delta took first place in 35 minutes 41.84 seconds, followed by Oyo in 37 minutes 29.84 and Plateau in 39 minutes 38.61 seconds. Lagos came in fourth after 40 minutes, 02.04 seconds.

According to Bashir Mohammed, the Technical Director of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, two additional States, Edo and Rivers, were disqualified for failing to submit the minimum of three female cyclists needed for the competition.

As the first event at the 21st National Sports Festival, the cycling competition was decided at the Stephen Keshi Stadium prior to the opening ceremony and having won the most medals at the Edo 2020 festival in Benin City, Team Delta is the festival’s reigning champion.

They are the most dominant team in recent times. Of the nine times Team Delta has participated in the NSF, they have finished at the top of the table for a record seven times. And if their win in the cycling event is anything to go by, they are on course to dominate again.
