SOUTH HADLEY — Youngsters attending the South Hadley Bike Rodeo Tuesday morning had a chance to learn their cycling ABCs: Air, Brakes and Chain, the things to check every time someone gets on a bicycle.
Those were just some of the smart tips offered by members of the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program at the Michael E. Smith Middle School event.
“We’re out here to have some fun,” said Andy Rogers, recreation director for the town. “South Hadley is really trying to become a bike friendly community. We’ve really made an effort to make the roads better for bikes and we want our kids to know how to do it.”
The children seemed to enjoy a game that taught them proper hand signals led by Jes Slavin of the Mass Bike Coalition. Then it was off to riding around cones and obstacles in the school parking lot.
Joining in the effort were members of the South Hadley police and fire departments, as well as ValleyBike who offered test rides on one of their electric assist bikes.
