Navi Mumbai: In a first, the residents of Navi Mumbai will soon be able to ride along a 7.5km long and three-metre wide dedicated cycling track, that will stretch between NMMC Headquarters at Killa Gaothan and Sanpada Moraj Circle, skirting the Palm Beach Road . The cost of the project cost has been pegged at Rs 13.9 crore. Apart from this, the civic body also plans to carry out beautification work along the said corridor to up the city’s liveable index.
“The objective of the track is to encourage youngsters to include cycling in their fitness routine, prepare for competitions, stay safe and maintain good health. The project has cleared all hurdles after obtaining several permissions from green authorities, and the contactor has been given a year long deadline to complete it,” NMMC city engineer Sanjay Desai informed.
The track will have an asphalt patch of 3.6km and a non-asphalt stretch (grit) of 3.5km due to environmental issues and forest rules restricting construction activity. The remaining 242m will have small bridges and culverts.
According to NMMC, the proposed green project first got a nod from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) followed by Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) approval. Residents who have been demanding the much-needed cycle track after the civic body spread awareness for eco-friendly rent-a-cycle scheme across the town, have welcomed the move, and the concept is already a big hit.
