The singlespeed women were the second-to-last race of the day, and committed to one gear on the muddy, heavy course.
Sunny Gilbert (Blue Competition Cycles p-b Build), defended her singlespeed title. This year, she didn’t have to worry about a falling golden bikini chasing her down .
Gilbert, fresh off a second place at the Singlespeed Cyclocross World Champs , had two minutes in hand at the finish. The champ said after her race: I missed a pedal at the start, no surprise there [because] my feet are frozen. Almost immediately, as soon as we hit the wood chips, I was like, ‘alright, I’ve got this,’ and just found every clean line. I had a couple of bobbles, I mean, who didn’t, but I was able to pull some stuff and got a gap almost immediately and went with it. Ivy Audrain, podcaster and racer for Squid, finished in second, with Sophie Russenberger (Team S&M CX), daughter of Swiss cyclocrosser Marcel Russenberger, finished in third.
