The City of Wanneroo released a flythrough animation showing the future criterium cycling facility at Splendid Park in Yanchep. A $4.7 million WA-first cycling facility will open in Yanchep on Saturday, with the state-of-the-art track already set to host the State criterium championships in 2023.
The purpose-built track circling the Splendid Park ovals and hard courts is the State’s first full-sized off-road criterium circuit at 1.4km long and 6m to 8m wide.
Criterium racing involves cyclists completing laps of a self-contained closed-circuit track.
The facility has been years in the making, with the City of Wanneroo working closely with the Northern Beaches Cycling Club, which had been pushing for a facility for cycling since 2013.
It comes after nearly 300 residents signed a petition in 2018 calling for a rider education centre and bike park in the City of Wanneroo for riders to practice away from traffic.
The new Yanchep circuit also includes a safe space for children to learn to ride.The petition presented various proposals at the time, including around the Alkimos wastewater treatment plant and Butler north playing fields.
