The championship is Benzie Sunrise Rotary’s annual event, raising funds for several local student programs focused on mentoring, scholarships, food insecurity support and literacy.
Five groups set off at different times shortly after 9 a.m. with groups tackling 62, 48, 34 and 14 mile routes along with the Gran Fondo route.
Gran Fondo is a cycling term that refers to a tour and a timed event meaning that traditional tour riders can enjoy rest stops featuring Cherry Hut pie and more serious riders compete for state champion jerseys.
