ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A project to expand a popular Eastern Carolina bike park is moving forward after a vote of approval by commissioners Monday morning.

Gearing up and getting ready to hit the biking trail is an activity many in Onslow County enjoy. Biker Bryce Kiogima says he goes out with his family regularly.

“I’ve been riding most of my life,” said Kiogima. “I got into mountain biking probably two to three years ago.”

Rod Smith says he has been into mountain biking for nearly 30 years.

“I started riding mini bikes in the woods in Texas when I was 12 years old,” said Smith.

The first phase of the Big Branch Bike Park started in 2021 and was to add more trails. A beginner and intermediate trail were added as well.

Now, as of Monday, the trails will grow 4.5 miles. However, making this happen wasn’t an easy task.“We really had some challenges to overcome,” said Ben Warren, the assistant county manager. “The sandy soils we have here, and it is pretty flat with the beach too. Finding those areas where we had topography that we could use for mountain bikes.”When Kiogima heard the news about the expansion, he was excited.“We are not near the mountains,” said Kiogima. “It’s nice for the county to utilize what we do have to offer here on the coast.”Smith drives an hour to and from Wilmington to enjoy the park.
