A group of Niles parents and residents living near the site of a crash that took the life of a 13-year-old bicyclist met with a village official Friday to express their concerns about the intersection, which they view as hazardous. Seven people sat down with Niles Village Manager Steve Vinezeano at Village Hall to express their concerns about the intersection of Waukegan Road and Cleveland Avenue, where 13-year-old Sam Yousif of Niles was struck by a pickup truck and killed July 16. Members of the group demanded that a traffic signal be installed at the intersection, which is part of a designated bike route through the community. “We’re mourning the death of one of the closest friends of our children just because of the nonsense of not having a stop light,” said Alexandra Garcia. Garcia and fellow parent Ticia Ashcroft questioned why a designated bike route, identified by green markings on the road, exists on Cleveland Avenue when bicyclists must cross a busy Waukegan Road without a traffic signal.
