(MONTCLAIR GUERILLA BIKE SHARE) Ever notice random bikes around town that don’t seem to be owned by anyone? Well, these bikes are part of the Montclair Guerrilla Bike Share Program . The program collects bikes from the trash, garage, clean-outs, donors, or wherever they can find bikes to fix them and get them back up and running. Once they are in riding condition, the bikes are put in a convenient place in Montclair where they can be found. If you find the bike, you can scan the QR code or visit the website to unlock it and ride it. After a ride, you can lock it up in a public place for the next person to find.
The creator of Montclair Guerrilla Bike Share declined to share his full name, but he goes by Andy, 46, and is a Montclair resident. In December of 2023, he found a few bikes that were going to be thrown away. Instead, he took them back home to repair. He kept doing this, and soon his garage was full of bikes.
“I was at work, and I was talking to a coworker who was like ‘I hate to take a bus here, but getting to that bus is challenging.’ I was like, you know, you should take one of the bikes that I pulled out of the trash and just leave it there and lock it up and then when you come back on the bus, you can take the bike back,” Andy said.
