(WCSC) – The Town of Mount Pleasant approved the design of another new cyclist and pedestrian project in an effort to keep the town safe, connected and accessible for all road users.
The Ben Marino Way Micromobility Project will allow residents to safely walk or bike from the Carolina Park Recreation Facility all the way to the Oceanside Collegiate Academy.
Leaders behind the project say they know that Oceanside students often utilize the recreation facility for the sporting equipment, and when events are held at one of the two locations, parking will often flow to the other, so their goal is to make sure that residents can safely walk from Oceanside to the recreation center and back.
Town leaders saw a need for more pedestrian access in this area as there are currently no sidewalks or bike lanes.
The Ben Marino Way Micromobility project would add some sidewalks and bike lanes to the road, as well as roadway lighting and a reduction in speed limit to 20 mph to keep nonmotorized road users as safe as possible.
Rion Longfellow, the engineer for this project, says, ideally, they want to create a space separate from the road for pedestrians and cyclists, like a boardwalk; however, there are wetlands on both sides of Ben Marino Way.
