Grands Prix de Montréal cyclists navigate the U-turn on Parc Ave. as they head to the climb up Mount Royal on Sept. 11, 2022. Montreal has been awarded the 2026 UCI World Road Cycling Championships. The announcement was made Thursday at the 2022 championships in Wollongong, Australia. Article content

This is the second time Montreal has hosted the event. The first edition of the championships outside Europe took place on the now legendary Mount Royal circuit in 1974, with Belgium’s Eddy Merckx and France’s Geneviève Gambillon crowned as the champions. Article content

The 2026 event, set for Sept. 20-27, will be held one week after the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal , the only events on the UCI World Tour staged in the Americas.

The event will feature 1,000 athletes in junior, U23 and elite events, and will consist of six time trials and five road races. Organizers said they expect more than 500,000 spectators — half of them from outside the region — who are expected to generate more than $170 million in overall economic activity for Quebec and more than $210 million for Canada. The event is expected to produce $54 million in tax revenue. Article content
