A new survey searched for the most bike-friendly cities in the UK Leicester has been named the seventh safest city to ride a bike around, according to a new survey. Experts at Claims.co.uk ranked different urban areas according to safety, surfaces, bike storage, lighting and how hilly the area is.

According to Claims.co.uk , cycling in the UK has surged by nearly 200 per cent since the Covid lockdowns began in March 2020 and there are no signs of it slowing as petrol prices soar. However, a relatively high score for the accident rate in Leicester meant it was beaten in the rankings by its hilly neighbour Nottingham, which was rated the third safest city for bicycle riders.

Despite an overall danger score of 3.29 out of 10 – based on accident statistics – Leicester was found to have well lit bike routes along 75 per cent of the total length of cycle lanes. It scored 1.5 out of 10 for the bumpiness of cycle lanes, making it among the best in the country, and a low score of 1.75 out of 10 for hills.

The most bike friendly city was Chelmsford in Essex, while Birmingham was found to be the most unfriendly city for cycling, closely followed by Newcastle and Plymouth.
