CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Chain Reaction Bike Hub hosted its second annual Kids Bike Drive on Sunday. Over 85 bikes got fixed and cleaned so they could be given to children for the holidays.
Eric Feldkamp said he remembers the joy he felt as a child when he saw his new bike under the tree on Christmas morning.
He said wants other kids to feel the same excitement.
“It’s almost like a rite of passage,” Feldkamp said. “We’re getting bikes for a lot of kids that may not have a way to have that amazing Christmas Day,” he said.
Feldkamp is just one of over 30 volunteers who helped work on the bikes.
“A lot of these people aren’t mechanics,” Feldkamp said. “But they’re bike riders and enthusiasts that also just want to give back and support the cause so it’s great how many people we have here today,” he said.
The Chain Reaction Bike Hub Executive Director, Evan Schmidtke said the group had even more bikes to work on for the drive this year.“We donated I think roughly 50 bikes last year and so we’re looking to do about twice that this year,” Schmidtke said.While making sure each bike is safe for its new riders, the crew gave each one a thorough cleaning.“Half the time it’s about how the bike looks.
