Wout van Aert responds to an attack from Mathieu van der Poel in the 2023 edition of Paris-Roubaix Former world champion and six-time monument winner Johan Museeuw has told GCN that Wout van Aert needs to start adding to his collection of Classics wins and that potentially focusing on the Giro d’Italia could be a mistake.

The three-time winner of Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders also believes that Mathieu van der Poel has a killer instinct in races that van Aert lacks.

Speaking to GCN at the Rouleur Live show in London, Museeuw predicted that the stars of 2023 would be the main favourites for the Spring Classics next season.

“Van der Poel is the first name because he won Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, and he is the world champion. He’ll be the favourite, but what we’ve seen from Tadej Pogańćar in the Classics is also amazing. If he comes back then he’ll try and win Flanders again. If he climbs like he did this year, then he’ll win again,” Museeuw said.

“Then we have Wout van Aert. He’s won Milan-San Remo in the past, but then it stopped, so it’s time for him to focus more on the Classics. He’s not old, but it’s time for him to win. He has a zero in Flanders and Roubaix.”
