Hartej (left) pictured with his father A schoolboy from Cambridgeshire is celebrating after winning a prestigious accolade at the Bikeability Trust’s Celebration of Bikeability Awards. Hartej Randhawa, from Longstanton, was named People’s Champion and won the Personal Achievement award.
The award recognises individuals who have overcome personal challenges to enjoy success in cycling. Hartej was announced as the winner of each award by CBBC’s Ricky Boleto and Paralympian champion Megan Giglia, OBE.
Hartej beat young cyclists from across England to be crowned as the winner of the award. He initially had trouble due to weak hand-eye co-ordination as well as weak core strength, but improved with practice and repeated sessions.
Emily Cherry, CEO of the Bikeability Trust, said: "“It is absolutely fantastic to come together and celebrate our Bikeability champions. These cycling superheroes are helping to inspire more people to cycle confidently on our roads, unlocking freedom and fun for millions of children across the UK.
"Hartej is an inspiration to other young cyclists. Hartej has worked hard to overcome personal challenges to go from a non-rider to a confident cyclist in just two years. It’s wonderful to hear that Hartej and his family can now enjoy cycle rides together.
"This demonstrates the huge value cycling can bring to families and I am proud that Bikeability can enable more families like Hartej’s to get in the saddle."
