Few things impacted day-to-day bicycling like the pandemic.

Gary Halsey owns Pedal Driven Bike Shop in Sanford.

"Everybody’s been locked down, trapped in their houses. Bicycling was one of the avenues to get out of house and work and whatever from being trapped," Halsey said.

For a lot of shops, sales of bikes and accessories doubled in 2020.

Now, gas prices have people thinking more about how much they drive.

We wondered if that might drive more interest in errands or commuting by bicycle."I don’t know if that’s directly related to gas sales, but we’ve definitely seen an uptick, and I think you can allocate some of that to gas," Halsey said.Halsey says quite a few people have shown an interest in e-bikes lately, bikes you can pedal or travel with a battery-powered electric assist."For commuting, it makes the effort, regardless of your fitness level easier, especially if you’re trying to go to an office job, you don’t want to arrive all hot and sweaty," Halsey said.Halsey says he and other bicycle enthusiasts are working to get local trail networks expanded and connected.He dreams of a day for people who have chosen a bicycle commute to do so without extensive mingling with cars and trucks."That really helps people commute without the danger of being right on the side of the road," Halsey said.Halsey hopes people are only half-joking when they say, “Hey, I might buy a bicycle and try to commute around, go to the grocery store or run some of […]
