Two previously planned Dundas cycling projects — the Cootes multi-use path extension, and the permanent Hatt Street cycle track — are the only Dundas projects in the City of Hamilton’s updated draft cycling work plan.
According to the plan, shared by city staff at the Dec. 7 Hamilton Cycling Committee meeting, the Cootes extension and bicycle boulevard on Baldwin Street are scheduled for implementation in 2023 after being deferred from 2022, and construction of the Hatt Street cycle track could take place in 2024, during the possible first stage of Hatt Street reconstruction between York Street and Bond Street.
After the permanent Hatt cycle track is complete from York Street to Market Street , the city can complete the Creighton Road link north along Market to Hatt, and eliminate the temporary route through J.L. Grightmire Arena parking lot.
City active transportation project manager Danny Pimentel said the Cootes multi-use path extension is a priority for 2023.
The project was announced in March 2022 and originally planned for implementation before the end of the year. Pimentel said in June planning was approximately 30 per cent complete.
The project includes an on-road Baldwin Street “bicycle boulevard” with signs and pavement markings indicating a cycling route. At Court Street and Cootes Drive, a three-metre wide bicycle lane would be added next to the existing sidewalk, and from Thorpe Street to Dundas Street, a three-metre wide multi-use path would replace the existing sidewalk.
