Dorchester County is considering a more holistic approach to how future road projects are planned out so that cyclists and pedestrians have right-of-way. DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Dorchester County is considering a more holistic approach to how future road projects are planned out so that cyclists and pedestrians have even more of a right-of-way.

“There’s only so many times you can widen a road before we start dividing our communities,” the advocacy group, Bike/Walk Summerville, Executive Director Christopher McClure said when talking about cyclists and pedestrians.

He says he believes there’s a lack of accommodations for them everywhere.

“We don’t have a lot of good examples here in the Lowcountry,” McClure said. “And the examples that we do have, there’s a lot of uphill opposition.”

But Dorchester County is hoping to flip the script with a new road ordinance called “Complete Streets.” This would require all future road projects to have more design standards, such as additions for cyclists and pedestrians, instead of just being optional.

County Council Vice Chairman David Chinnis says these conversations have been in the works for over a year. He describes this ordinance as not deciding how a road is necessarily built, but a new approach to building roads in the county.

“It may require a school to ensure that there are loops for picking up these children that are long enough and they’re not blocking main thoroughfares,” Chinnis said. “Or that sidewalks are there and it’s safe and accessible so that they can ultimately walk to school.”Chinnis says […]
