KOLKATA: Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday said that cycling was not a realistic option in Kolkata due to space constraints but he will urge people to use green transport as much as possible for the improvement of the city’s air quality.
"There is only 7% open space in the city. There are cycle tracks in New Town but a similar one could not be developed in the city as it might result in accidents. There is no space in the city to be earmarked as cycle bays," said Hakim.
"Many people in the city depend on cycles and the authorities should take initiatives to consider their convenience," said Satanjib Gupta of Bicycle Mayor of Kolkata, BYCS.
