Officials from the Health Department said that cycling offers numerous health benefits; Health experts say it is a good way to control or reduce weight and must be combined with a healthy eating plan Cyclists pedal around city with message to incorporate the sport for improved quality of life; want higher safety measures for themselves and better lanes

Cyclists from across the city pedalled to promote the sport in India’s IT capital. Many of them said that although cycling was picking up, the lack of cycle paths was a hindrance.

“Cyclists are scared to pedal in the city due to heavy traffic. Many times, drivers of huge vehicles try to scare them. If there is a cycle path, then cyclists can pedal comfortably, thereby saving the environment as well,” said Vidhyadhar, a techie.

Sunita R, a cyclist, said, “Though we have a few cycle paths in the city, they are not maintained well, and it is not enough. We need to have continuous cycle paths like in foreign countries so that many more people can take it up without fear of being hit by other vehicles.”

Meanwhile, officials from the Health Department said that cycling offered numerous health benefits. “Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) account for more than 63 per cent of deaths in the country. Most NCDs are strongly associated and causally linked with major behavioural risk factors such as tobacco use (smoking and smokeless), alcohol use, poor dietary habits, insufficient physical activity, and air pollution.
