Westminster City Council has been working in partnership with the London Borough of Camden to deliver a new cycleway in central London on Cleveland Street, between Maple Street and Mortimer Street, to help reduce traffic, improve pedestrian and cyclist safety and increase local air quality.
The Cleveland Street route was originally consulted on in 2016 under the name of Quietway 88. Since then, proposals have substantially changed to meet present day cycling standards and therefore, both councils are seeking views on the updated proposals to refine and improve them further.
The cycle lane proposals and further enhancement of the scheme have already been consulted on and supported by residents, but both councils are now looking for feedback on improvements to the approved scheme, such as: Segregated contraflow cycle lanes (where cyclists can travel two way on one way roads) and changes to facilitate protected cycling and to help cyclists get in front of general traffic
New zebra crossings, pavement level crossings across junctions and the widening of existing crossings to slow traffic and make crossing the road safer for pedestrians
“No loading” restrictions along Cleveland St to make cycling safer and more continuous
Changes to traffic signals to allow southbound cyclists to continue on Newman Street
