It has proven popular in Washington, Philadelphia and other cities, and now Baltimore City is getting its own bite share program.

The Board of Estimates today approving the $2.5-million contract with a Canadian firm Berewegen.

The program will offer 500 bites at 50 different locations around the city, where people can rent bicycles for a day, or a week to travel through downtown. The price to consumers is still being negotiated.

Officials say 200 of the 500 bikes will have electric motors making it easier for the disabled, or the elderly to operate.

Officials say the goal of the program is to offer people inexpensive transportation around the city, and attract more visitors.
