It will soon be a bit easier to retrieve stolen bicycles, with Greater Sudbury Police Service having signed a partnership with 529 Garage.

Local bicycle owners will be able to register their bike’s serial number on Project529.com , which police will have access to in the event their bike ends up stolen and recovered.

“Anybody can do it, they can do it with their cellphone,” Deputy Chief Natalie Hiltz told the police board during this week’s meeting.

“When they’re recovered, there’s no doubt as to who their owner is and it can be returned to their rightful owner.”

Following the meeting Hiltz said they just received approval to sign up with 529 Garage and that she expects to have it available to the public as soon as possible in the new year.

The cost, she said, is “nominal” compared to the value residents will get in being reunited with their bicycles.Bicycles are important for a lot of people, she said, adding that theft can be “a huge deal,” since “a lot of people rely on bikes to get to work, get to school.”There were 85 bicycles reported stolen in Greater Sudbury last […]
