For many children, the Town of Tillsonburg’s bike rodeo on Saturday, May 27 was ‘their first rodeo.’ Article content
“It is such a needed thing because these kids haven’t had this type of instruction in town for… I can’t even remember how long it’s been,” said Julie Dawley, a member of the bike rodeo committee – a partnership between the town and Oxford OPP – with Becky Turrill, Andrea Greenway, and OPP Constable Patti Cote.
Ideas for bike rodeo stations were borrowed from other rodeos in the area and children learned essential bicycle handling and traffic skills, and basic bike safety.
“Oxford OPP supplied 75 helmets, so if any children showed up without a helmet, they would be given a free helmet,” said Dawley. “Or if their helmet didn’t fit, they’d get a free helmet.” Marshall Olcsvary follows ‘the blue line’ during the Town of Tillsonburg’s May 27 bike rodeo, a partnership with Oxford OPP. The under-five participants were offered a mini-rodeo on the JL Scott McLean Outdoor Recreation Pad, while the five-and-older participants got ‘the full rodeo’ experience in the adjacent Tillsonburg Community Centre parking lot.
