(WCIV) — The Ashley River Crossing bridge, a long-awaited infrastructure project, is set to provide a safer route for bicyclists and pedestrians traveling between West Ashley and the Peninsula.
Katie Zimmerman, a bicycle safety advocate, emphasized the significance of the project, saying, "It’s a big deal." Zimmerman, who commutes primarily by bicycle, described the current bridges as dangerous. "Now, I bike over the existing bridges and it’s not a good experience, and I don’t encourage anybody to do that but that’s what I’ve been doing for 17 years," she said.
City of Charleston Councilman Mike Seekings highlighted the necessity of the bridge, stating, "A piece of infrastructure connecting West Ashley to downtown is something that we’ve desperately needed." Seekings explained that the project is essentially threefold: the West Ashley side, the bridge itself, and the landing on the Peninsula at Lockwood Boulevard.
While construction is expected to begin on the West Ashley side in November, some details remain unresolved, particularly regarding the bridge’s endpoint. Earlier this week, Mayor William Cogswell expressed support for connecting the bridge to the Medical District, a change from his initial stance.
