Beginning in March, Chandler will start working toward improving bicycle safety. Over two miles of routes will connect schools, canals and surface streets.

The city was awarded over $13 million in federal grant money. It was fully funded through the Maricopa Association of Governments for federal formula Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality.

“When we developed that transportation master plan, city residents expressed a strong interest in having better bicycle facilities,” said Jason Crampton, transportation planning manager. “So this is our first effort at that and we think it’s a great location with those key connectors.”

Contractors were chosen in late January. Crampton anticipates the project will take between 18 and 20 months. The main focus will be the SRP Canal, five elementary schools and several large surface streets.

“We are refreshing the corridor by replacing aging streetlights with brand new street lights. We are adding art to the corridor, landscaping in addition to the bike lane treatment,” said Crampton. “So it’s really a whole corridor, roadway refresh project.”

Work has partially begun on Frye Road, canals and Paseo crossing and trails.

Crampton said expansion beyond Frye Toad would be a challenge, as the road widens to four lanes of traffic. The city is looking to add north and south bike path connections to the road instead expanding past it.Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke explained that the city continues to plan as they develop or work on other roads.“Whenever we strengthen a major arterial road, we add bike lanes to them,” Hartke said.Crampton said there are several […]
