The Greenways project aims to provide safe routes for people to walk and cycle into Cambridge city centre, from surrounding South Cambridgeshire villages. Plans for two new Greenways to better connect Cambridge and the surrounding villages move forward, as councillors and other local representatives quiz officers about some of the details. The Greenways project is being led by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) as part of a plan to encourage people to use ‘active travel’, such as walking and cycling, to travel into Cambridge city centre from the surrounding South Cambridgeshire villages.
There are 12 Greenway routes currently being developed by the GCP. A report on the Comberton and Haslingfield Greenways was presented to the Partnership’s joint assembly at a meeting yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, November 23). Officers asked the members to consider the proposals for the two Greenways ahead of them being presented to the executive board next month.
A report highlighted some of the feedback that had been received and noted some changes proposed. This included a further consultation on the Grantchester section of the Haslingfield Greenway. The report said the Grantchester Parish Council had carried out a survey that showed a majority of respondents would rather the Greenway take a different route than go through Grantchester itself. It said there was “no clear consensus” and therefore a decision on the exact route was proposed to be deferred and for a formal public consultation to be held on this specific part of the route.
