Boston Mayor Michelle Wu gave the MBTA a pass Thursday and rode her bike to work instead.

Wu commuted to City Hall from Adams Park Roslindale on her bicycle and invited others to join her on the 8-mile ride.

Cyclists have urged Wu to expand the network of designated bike lanes in Boston and have called for designated bike lanes on Charles Street.

"Those connection points are really critical," Wu said. "We’ve been working hard over the last couple of months and should have an announcement later this month about where we’re headed."

Advocates hope that the ride will open more people’s eyes to the possibility of biking in the city — especially with the upcoming Orange Line shutdown.

"We know the way that people will change how they commute — as if it’s more convenient, if it’s safe, if it’s faster, so biking is a lot of those things. But the safety piece — we definitely have to work on in our city," Wu said. Recommended Sewer emergency forces immediate shutdown of Provincetown restaurants, adds restrictions for residents
