DAYTONA BEACH — When most bikers roll up onto Main Street during Bike Week and Biketoberfest, they see burgers and turkey legs being sold hot off the grill, vendors hawking a rainbow of T-shirts and biker souvenirs, and bands pounding out the soundtrack for the party celebrating two-wheeled fun.

What most bikers don’t see is the behind-the-scenes process that governs what businesses can do during Bike Week and Biketoberfest , and the temporary suspension of usual rules that allows all the outdoor activity .

The city government has been reviewing those rules the past few months, and some suggested changes have businesses upset.

At a nearly two-hour meeting Monday night, one business owner after another popped up to question why some of the changes were being considered, and to explain how some of those ideas could hurt their establishment and the viability of the biker events. One week before Bike Week 2024 is slated to kick off, Daytona Beach city government officials are looking into possible rule changes for Bike Week and Biketoberfest that could kick in starting in October. City commissioners will decide within a few months what, if anything, they want to change. Those ideas will be discussed at several public meetings that have not been scheduled yet.
