PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. —
Bicycle safety advocates are weighing in on the changes needed to cut down on vehicle versus bicycle crashes.
Following the recent fatal crash involving a bicyclist and motorist in Boca Raton, WPBF 25 News sat down with advocates on the local and state levels who say these tragedies happen far too often. Florida Bicycle Association
Kelly Morphy is the executive director of the Florida Bicycle Association .
"We’re working to make conditions all across Florida safer and better and more accessible for people who both want to bicycle and for people who need to bicycle," Morphy said.
The association focuses on education, advocacy and policy change.
"We advocate for better infrastructure and better infrastructure design and better policy to create the physical space where people can bicycle safely," Morphy explained. "And then the policy space where people can be assured that they are going into a safe condition and if that anybody were to violate their right to move safely and freely that there would be accountability for that."
Morphy said these tragedies need to stop. "In Florida, we unfortunately kill hundreds of people on bicycles every year, and hundreds more who are pedestrians. We can do better, and we should be doing better. And Florida Bicycle Association and other like-minded organizations are working very hard to make that the case," she said.While it’s an uphill battle, she said it’s a battle they are willing to fight.
