Bike riders took part in the annual Ride Cincinnati event Saturday benefiting cancer research. CINCINNATI (WXIX) -Participants gathered in downtown Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday for a bike ride to raise money for the fight against cancer.

Ride Cincinnati took place at Sawyer Point and featured five route options: 10, 15, 24.36, and 64 miles.

“This is our 18th year of the event. It’s amazing seeing families come together to celebrate their loved ones who are living with cancer and really improving the outcomes of people living with cancer here in Cincinnati,” Ride Cincinnati spokesperson Allison Schroeder said.

Schroeder says the organization has raised $8.1 million for local cancer research and funded 77 research grants.

“My college fraternity brother, my big brother got cancer—it was about six months after I graduated, he graduated the previous year. He was told that he wouldn’t survive into the holidays. It’s the same cancer that took his dad,” Rider and race participant Craig Alexander said.

Alexander says he is not the fastest rider, and he’s not winning any races, but the important thing is that he’s taking part. He’s riding to support cancer research and to remember the loved ones he’s lost to cancer.

“Life is uncertain and you don’t know there are no guarantees, so I decided if not today, when? And so I began racing, and I’ve got probably more than 200 races in my lifetime,” Alexander said. The ride concluded with a celebration at Sawyer Point. See a spelling or grammar error in our story?
