The bicycle industry has seen highs and lows over the past few years, from the demand for bikes during the pandemic, to not having enough inventory for customers.

If you walk into Competitive Gear on West 12th Street, you will find a full showroom, something that hasn’t been the norm over the past few years.

Peter McMaster, the President of Competitive Gear said, "In 2020, there wasn’t a single bike in our showroom before and finally after two years, we have probably 400-500 bikes in stock again, last summer we had 20 given bikes at any time and now we have a full stock of everything."

McMaster said their sales have continued to rise since march of 2020 and it hasn’t slowed down. "Once 2020 happened with Covid and families got on lock down, they wanted to do things together and so bike sales have been extraordinary."

McMaster said E-Bikes are the new hot commodity. This comes as people may be finding alternative ways to get around to save money on gas, but hasn’t he seen people trading in their cars for bikes quite yet. "In a small matter yes, but not massive, I would imagine if gas hits $6 a gallon, it will be a much more of a rush", explained McMaster.

McMaster said whether you are riding for a hobbies or to save money on gas, there’s a few things you need to get to stay safe while riding on paths or roads.
