Kihikihi School pupils were celebrating Monday the announcement of Government funding into safe walking and cycling infrastructure. Students are with, from left, principal Sunny West, Waipā deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk, community board chair Ange Holt and mayor Susan O’Regan. The Waikato region is set to get a $57 million slice of the $350 million in Transport Choices cash unveiled by the Government.

Hamilton is due for up to $43.7 million, Waipā $10.4 million, Matamata-Piako $2.56 million and Taupō $350,000.

The funding, conditional on final discussions with transport agency Waka Kotahi, will give a substantial boost to cycling, walking and public transport.

For Hamilton, the $43.7 million announcement comes soon after the Government confirmed a $150.6 million grant for boosting inner city intensification, including a new pedestrian and cycling bridge from Hamilton East to the CBD.

Matt Fordham from Crank leads a group of kids in a bike train in Pt Chevalier, where about 15 to 20 children end up riding together to school.
