If it is one of Britain’s Tom Pidcock , Switzerland’s Nino Schurter , or – perhaps unlikely, but who knows? – even Dutch star Mathieu van der Poel , it could be a historic achievement for the winner.
All three are attempting to do something rare and special – Pidcock to win the last major title missing from his MTB collection; Schurter extend his record number of rainbow jerseys; and Van der Poel – already the road race world champion in Glasgow – complete a stunning road and MTB double.
